A Soho icon from Andre Balazs set in a Romanesque revival building.

So many hotels in New York prove to be mere flashes in the pan. How refreshing, then, to see that the Mercer Hotel, which helped define the vibrant boutique concept, continues to thrive. This SoHo icon from Andre Balazs—sister property to West Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont and London’s Chiltern Firehouse—is set in a Romanesque Revival building. Arguably the city’s first loft-style accommodations, it has a decidedly industrial feel, with exposed brickwork, high ceilings, iron columns, and wooden floors. The 75 rooms, outfitted with Christian Liaigre furnishings and distinctive oversized marble tubs, are cool and spare. Even for those who aren’t staying in one of them there is a reason to linger: Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s ever-popular bilevel Mercer Kitchen, decked out with banquettes and wenge-wood furnishings.
