Few properties are as legendary as the Beverly Hills Hotel. Ever since this grande dame opened in 1912, the Sunset Boulevard "Pink Palace" has swarmed with celebrities (and elicited countless morsels of salacious gossip as a result). Its past is perhaps best captured—and kept alive—at the Polo Lounge, the deal-making haven for power lunches. Famous for its green-and-white stripes, it has a clubby feel thanks to wood paneling and warm upholstery. The Fountain Coffee Room, serving milkshakes and the like around a curvaceous counter, is another choice roost for people-watching. Renovating such a historic property required great care, and New York-based designer Adam Tihany delivered in spades. Preserving the hotel’s signature banana-leaf motif, in the lobby he installed a new limestone medallion in the same shape. Hand-tufted carpeting and cerused oak add another jolt of glamour at the entry. For the 208 guestrooms and 23 bungalows, Tihany accentuated the hotel’s iconic pink-and-green palette with shades of cream and taupe. Antique bronze lighting casts a warm glow over such materials as ebonized oak and mohair. Hell, even the most dazzling Hollywood starlet needs a facelift from time to time.
