SoHo’s classic architectural gem.
The SoHo Grand Hotel is a monument in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood, for all that it is today and all that it has been in the past. Its banded brick facade and understated wrought-iron awning, designed by Helpern Architects, allude to the neighborhood’s architectural lineage. Inside, interior designer Bill Sofield juxtaposed gilded age details—masonry columns, cast-iron detailing—with an art collection curated by New York photographer Andrea Stern. The collection ranges from contemporary, site-specific work—like the large-scale charcoal Conté drawing over the lobby’s glass-bottle staircase—to midcentury black and white photographs in the 355 rooms. In bathrooms, a wall covering by New Yorker illustrator Saul Steinberg complements wire-glass mirrors. This fusion of art and vintage accents imbues the SoHo Grand with a distinctive, nostalgic glamour throughout. Locals, too, are drawn to old-world style in their favorite neighborhood; any given night at the Grand Bar and Lounge, SoHo socialites sit at the marble topped oak bar, sipping rare American whiskey.
