Local designer Steven Sclarof is behind this stylish throwback.
Jason Pomeranc, the hotelier often credited with spawning lifestyle-inspired stays at Thompson Hotels, has instilled the same spirit at his spinoff portfolio Sixty. The Columbus Circle outpost feels like an interloper on the staid Upper West Side, which draws more theater and performance art fans than it does downtown cool kids. Local designer Steven Sclarof is behind the stylish throwback, appointing the 88 rooms with retro touches like Saarinen-style side tables, blue-tiled bathrooms, and mod illuminated mirrors; works by French fashion photographer Guy Bourdin add extra doses of flair. In the lobby, cowhide-swathed walls and shag carpets reinforce the 60s aesthetic. New York’s popular Blue Ribbon Sushi and the rooftop bar Above 6, with its wood-framed benches and floral-print pillows, have become hangouts for south-of-fourteenth-street refugees. Maybe the sprawling views of Central Park have something to do with it?
