A renovated midcentury-style Deco property by interior designer Anthony Baratta.
In the 1950s, Stan Laurel—of Laurel & Hardy fame—made his home the Oceana Apartment Hotel in Santa Monica, a swank residence with private balconies where fellow celeberites Jerry Lewis and Dick Van Dyke came to party. Today, the midcentury building is the Oceana Beach Club Hotel, a 70-room Deco property given a retro-style renovation by interior designer Anthony Baratta, who ditched the former Mediterranean aesthetic for a more California sensibility. The light, airy rooms have a residential feel, with tropical blue sofas, sunshine yellow ottomans, and Calder-inspired chandeliers. Some have deep-soaking tubs, others balconies and views over the courtyard pool or Pacific Ocean. Their Tower 8 restaurant, which celebrates local flavors and is done up in coral-hued rugs, orb lighting fixtures, and honeycomb-patterned chairs. The chef makes weekly visits to the famous Santa Monica farmers market to purchase local fare for the restaurant.
