A vivid, theatrical design based on Jean Cocteau’s 1946 film, La Belle et la Bête.

Beyond picturesque gates, the Mondrian Soho, on the border of New York’s Chinatown and SoHo, exemplified the chic downtown boutique hotel. Now the property has found new life as the indie NOMO Soho (NOMO stands for the apt descriptors nostalgic and modern, by the way). The name change thankfully preserves Benjamin Noriega Ortiz’s vivid, theatrical design based on Jean Cocteau’s 1946 film, La Belle et la Bête. The 263 guestrooms are bright and airy (especially the VIP King Balcony suite) with myriad touches of light blue, floor-to-ceiling windows, and marble spa bathrooms. A similar vibe is on display at the garden-like NOMO Kitchen, which is swathed in greenery and natural light that streams through the striking glass roof. Downstairs, the Library Bar, fittingly tucked behind a bookshelf wall, attracts a more intimate crowd in search of nightcaps.
